Stage One Work

Measured Chaos

This piece of work was a group piece created along side abstract artist Lothar Gotz. The wall mural was painted using acrylic paints in the university cafe. To create the sharp lines and circle we used a range of sized; frog tape, masking tape and circular objects. Overall, the piece took up to four days to complete.

Untitled

This piece started by relating to the theme of opposites and contradictions, and from looking into this theme I decided to look at the feelings of a person with depression. The figure is wrapped in a straight jacket and looking down to create the idea of them being trapped and constantly feeling lonely and sad. The pill above the head is to show how medication is meant to be the solution to this issue where as the rose petals are to signify the happiness within the pill and how it is to try and make the person well again.

Internal Colours

The sculpture above is a large scaled version of the human heart made from recycled materials such as; a bottle, chicken wire, rope, mod rock, newspaper and a plinth. To create the piece I used the wire, bottle and newspaper to create the base and to create texture and the outer shell, I used the mod rock and rope. Once the mod rock was dried I added the coloured paint to make the piece more abstract and different from a realistic model. The sculpture is also interactive as it can be turned on the plinth.

Cracked

This is a self portrait sculpture which was created using metal wire, wood and clay. Using 360 photos of my own head I was able to create a well sculpted and scaled piece of work. As the piece was drying the sculpture unfortunately started to crack. However, the cracks added a creative weathering effect. To display the work, I added a piece of fabric around the base and placed it on top of a white painted plinth.

Clean Cut

Tic is a project which is based around a person who suffers from Tourette’s syndrome and what it's like to have tics. To create this piece, I met up with someone I know who has Tourette’s and asked them several questions about what it's like to have the disorder. Questions included; what does it feel like to have a tic? What colour do you think your tics are?, If you have to relate your Tourette’s with an animal what would it be?, etc.

From the answers given I was able to draw up a design and paint it. In the design you can see the person suffering from Tourette’s with a chimpanzee's head, as they relate themselves as a 'cheeky chimp'. Also, the chimp is painted in multicolours to show how their tics are seen to be an arrange of colours which relate to their emotions. The lightning bolts above the head is to show how the tics are like electricity, it also relates to the connection between two people who suffer from the disorder and how some people with Tourette’s feel like they can feel electricity.  Finally, I added splats of neon and glow in the dark splatters of paint to show how tics feel like a large sneeze.

Below is a gallery of all of the photos/videos taken of the piece.

Clean Cut

Clean Cut is a project that started off looking into the relationship between; colour, shape and repetition. Throughout the project I also looked at the work of minimal artists and how my work was related, from this I came up with the title of Clean Cut due to the use of hard, clean cut edges of the produced work.

To start the project, I started with taking recycled wood and looking at different ways I could create patterned and straight edges. To do this I used frog tape with acrylic paint and as a result of this I created several pieces showing colours together, colours separated by white, colours seperated by the grain of wood and how the colour black created a large role in future work.

From this I tried out the pouring technique of mixing paint, PVA glue and a silicone spray solution by pouring the mixture onto canvases to see how the colours interacted. When looking at the result I then developed my work by adding black stripes to make the work more interesting and make the work look as if there is a foreground as well as a background.

Besides these techniques I experimented with lino prints, coloured tape, acrylic gloss, interaction of line and shape as well as the interaction of different sized shapes. I also looked at the way lines could be created in a sculpture and projection.

By using sculpture, black outlines and projection as the main focus, this helped me to create my final two pieces which were shown in the Stage One Fine Art Exhibit. I created a large hanging sculpture using string, wire and newsprint, which was white and projected a looping film over the top. As well as this, I created a large wooden wall painting, looking into the shaped canvas and the interaction of colour and shape. Both of these exhibition pieces varied in size depending on their positions.
