Theory and Context

Postmodernism

A late 20th-century style and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a reaction against the ideas and values of modernism. It is characterized by the self-conscious use of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic and popular  styles and media, and a general distrust of theories.

Postmodernism has a great deal of links within my work as I work around with different styles and media. Mixing the abstract painting and the figurative drawing as well as mixing in collage of materials and the use of found objects to print and add textures.

Andy Warhol

An american artist, who was a leading figure in the visual art movement known as Pop art. He was a Ruthenian Cathlic and at a young age was ill leading him to being bed bound, while drawing, listening to the radio and collecting movie star posters, which soon became a huge influence of Warhol.

The influence in which struck Warhol to create his celebrity paintings is on a similar level to why I choose the figures I am going to paint. I take people who not only who I idolize but who are a constant face within the public eye.

Idolizing Celebrities Can Be Toxic For Both Parties - Article

“The love that a fan has for a certain celebrity blinds them of any wrongdoing. In their minds the celebrity is perfect and cannot make any mistakes”

This quote has a huge relation to my work as within my paintings I am trying to show the audience that due to the use of social media we have started to worship and idolize celebrities to a similar extent to the way in which we worship the likes of God.
